[Review] A Tool that Combines Retro and Art: Kase Magnetic Black Mist Filter
Every photographer or photography enthusiast likely has one wish: to capture the exact image they envision in their mind with every shoot. However, in reality, the stability of each shoot comes from the photographer's solid preparation. Various factors, such as the concept, theme, composition, lighting, and shooting location, all play a role in influencing how each photographic work ultimately turns out.
If high-performance cameras and expensive lenses are the key factors determining the quality of the initial shoot, then having an accessory that is lightweight, compact, and easy to carry, while also delivering outstanding performance, would be an enticing addition. Such accessories are truly tempting for photographers.
Well, here it is—the all-new Kase Magnetic Black Mist Filter has arrived.
I am an independent female portrait photographer, and shooting creative portraiture from time to time is a natural part of my career. In my recent work, I used the new Kase Magnetic 1/4 Black Mist Filter, which I had heard positive reviews about from many photography enthusiasts and professionals in the film industry. Kase has innovatively developed this magnetic Black Mist Filter, providing a simple, convenient, and easy-to-use creative tool for independent photographers, image professionals, and photography enthusiasts, while also offering a more cinematic shooting experience.
Camera shooting
First, I chose to shoot a set of outdoor autumn portraits. For the first scene, I decided to use natural light only. The shoot took place around 3 PM, when the sunlight was quite strong and coming from a low angle, creating a high contrast between light and shadow. The model was positioned against the light, with backlighting, and I used a reflector as a fill light. Before starting, I was a bit apprehensive, worried that shooting with such strong backlight and using the Black Mist filter would cause issues like focus hunting or slow autofocus, which could affect the shooting progress and the final result. However, once we started shooting, I realized my concerns were unnecessary. Not only did I not experience any of these issues, but the images also had a cinematic quality that I was really happy with.
Next, I shot in more complex lighting conditions, where there was a significant contrast between light and shadow. Despite the noticeable changes in the lighting, the soft-focus effect helped the transition of light and shadow on the model’s face appear very natural, with no harsh or unnatural transitions.
As the lighting changed, we moved into the woods. At this point, I switched the fill light to two LED continuous lights, creating a soft and even light on the model's face. The Black Mist filter made the model's skin appear radiant and luminous, without losing any details.
In larger scene shots, the Black Mist filter also did not cause any loss of image quality.
Finally, during sunset, I took some photos with light flares. The bokeh in the background showcased a unique cinematic effect that only appeared when using the Black Mist filter.
After this shoot, my confidence in the lens grew significantly. Next, I took it indoors to shoot a portrait with a princess dream theme. For this shoot, I combined natural light with a flash under overcast conditions, to experience how the Black Mist filter performed in indoor settings.
The Kase 1/4 Black Mist filter visibly softened the contrast, creating a perfectly balanced atmospheric feel for the theme. The highlights weren't too harsh, and the shadows didn't appear too dark. The overall light transition in the image was smooth, and the model's skin looked delicate and soft.
The Kase 1/4 Black Mist filter also lived up to expectations in terms of concealing imperfections indoors. Even with the table lamp on, it controlled the lighting beautifully. The image had a subtle, almost imperceptible hazy effect, which perfectly matched the theme of my creative work.
Even when shooting close-up details, the Kase 1/4 Black Mist filter perfectly captured the texture and details in the image.
What's even more noteworthy is that the Kase 1/4 Black Mist filter now comes with a magnetic lens cap, which makes it incredibly convenient to attach and remove. This feature is truly unique among filter manufacturers in the industry. Here's the latest product shot:
The Kase 1/4 Black Mist filter will undoubtedly become my go-to filter for portrait photography, landscapes, astrophotography, street photography, travel, and more in the future. It will broaden my photographic journey, opening up new and more creative possibilities for my work.
